Practical tyre advice

What to do after a tyre blowout

Your location changes the next step

A safely parked vehicle and a vehicle stopped next to fast-moving traffic need different responses. Use hazard lights to warn other road users where appropriate. Follow the Highway Code and any instructions from emergency services or the road operator.

On a motorway, do not attempt to change or inspect a tyre beside traffic. If you cannot leave the vehicle safely, are in a live lane or feel your life is in danger, stay belted in with hazard lights on and call 999.

When it is safe to wait outside

Where safe to do so, leave through the side away from traffic and wait well away from the vehicle and moving traffic, behind a safety barrier if available. Do not cross the carriageway. Help children and passengers only where it is safe.

Your precise circumstances matter. If you are unsure whether leaving is safe, contact emergency services and follow their instructions. Do not rely on a tyre company call as a substitute for an immediate safety response.

Give a precise position

Once safe, explain the road and direction of travel, your parked position and what has happened. A location pin can help. Do not walk into an unsafe place to look for a marker or take a photograph.

  • Location, road name and direction if relevant.
  • Registration and tyre size if you already know it.
  • Which tyre failed and whether the vehicle is in a safe place.
  • Any access problem, run-flat tyre or missing locking nut key.

Tyre attendance after the safety arrangements

A blowout must not be assumed repairable. Safe access, a suitable tyre and attendance arrangements need to be discussed. An unsafe roadside position may require recovery before fitting can take place.
